On July 12, 2017, local artist Andrew Newell Wyeth turned 100! To honor this special day, Hardcastle Gallery will display 4 beautifully framed, signed and numbered reproductions by the late artist.
One of the most prominent artists of the 20th-century, Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) lived in Chadds Ford, Pa. He typically spent each summer and early fall in Maine. In both places, he was inspired by the lives, houses, and personal belongings of the people around him. In his paintings, the artist incorporated his daily life into his subject matter. Andrew Wyeth's work stands out for its startling austerity and strategic lack of color.
Using his realistic style to capture a sense of wonder and even the strange in his paintings, Wyeth is often referred to as "painter of the people" and "America's artist". He preferred to use wet watercolor and dry-brush watercolor techniques to create his distinctive paintings. Eventually, he used egg tempera and a limited palette to created his masterpieces.
